Welcome to my page!
I’m Dr. Júlia López Mercadal, a passionate biologist specialized in entomology, with a deep interest in plant health and pest management.

About me

I hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical and Evolutionary Biotechnology (Cum Laude) from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where I also completed my undergraduate and Master's degrees. Over the years, I have dedicated my career to the study of entomology, with a particular focus on invasive insect species and their impact on ecosystems and agriculture.

My research journey

My research journey began with an in-depth analysis of the Asian Tiger Mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and expanded to encompass other key agricultural pests, such as Empoasca vitis in grapevines. During my Ph.D., I explored the bioecology of Xylella fastidiosa insect vectors in olive trees, almonds, and grapevines in the Balearic Islands, a project financed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Spanish Government. My work was recognized with the prestigious EFSA Young Research Initiative prize and UIB’s award for dissemination excellence.

I have gained international experience through internships at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and the Instituto Politecnico de Bragança in Portugal, followed by a year-long traineeship at EFSA, where I specialized in pest risk assessment for invasive alien species. In addition to scientific research, I contributed to EFSA’s outreach and engagement initiatives, including the coordination of the 4th European Conference on Xylella fastidiosa.

Afterwards, I served as a scientific project manager for the EFSA Horizon Scanning Project at the National Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) in France, focusing on early detection and risk management of emerging plant pests. My expertise in entomology, plant health, and pest risk assessment enables me to contribute to the protection of agriculture and the environment on a European scale.
